Improving steel armor by adding perforations

The new armor development, know as Super bainite steel, is stronger than comparable ‘normal’ armor. This is due to the combination of new hardening techniques and the addition of holes to the steel plate,

The ballistic performance of perforated super bainite steel armor is at least twice that of conventional rolled homogeneous steel armor. Adding holes create a large number of edges which disrupt the path of incoming projectiles, significantly reducing their potency.

It is anticipated that the development could be beneficial beyond the field of defense. Many industries e.g. mining, motor manufacturing and various production industries will have a requirement for high hardness materials.
