See Through Organs

A new chemical reagent called Scale is able to make biological tissues transparent, allowing researchers to more easily study the marked cells within.

Dr. Atsushi Miyawaki led the team that created the reagent, which they used to make the brain tissue of test mice clear. The team was able to see into the tissue at a depth of several millimeters, and were able to observe the "axons connecting the left and right hemispheres...in greater detail than ever before."

Miyawaki believes the reagent should work equally as well on other organs, and allow for experiments that have never been possible before.
