Quick change for street furniture

If the foundation of a street pole was separate from the part above ground, the upper part could be replaced without having to touch the part buried beneath the surface. The Permanent Underground Base, or PUB, is a galvanised steel cylinder, fixed permanently into a conventional concrete foundation. Inside it, a polymer sleeve can receive the pole and hold it tight in a lubricated friction grip. If the pole has to be replaced, it can be jacked out in a matter of a few minutes and a new one dropped in. The system is suitable for road signs, signals and barriers of all kinds and has variants that allow electrical wiring, with access for maintenance. As well as avoiding disruption, this quick replacement also saves the high cost of bringing in heavy equipment, so the system can be self-financing.
