VW has announced a fuel cell based on a proton exchange membrane (PEM) which works at high temperatures. That can solve 2 problems of the current PEM's: low temperature working and the need to keep the membrane moist.
The new membrane can handle temperatures of 160°C with a planned average around 120°C. The electrolyte is based on fosfur acid, which has the same electrolytic properties of water.
